Untreated Water Flows into Pittsboro Creek

Posted Updated

PITTSBORO — Crews in Pittsboro spent their Fourth of July holiday knee deep in wastewater.

They pumped out thousands of gallons of the stuff after it spilled at the Townsend Poultry Plant.

It began when a pipe broke at the plant, sending 15,000 gallons of untreated water into a nearby creek.

The Environmental Protection Agency is testing oxygen levels and looking for traces of E. coli and choliform bacteria.

A plant manager said the water contained nothing toxic.
