ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — One person died in a two-car crash on southbound Interstate 95 on Friday morning, the state Highway Patrol said.

Mary E. Brooks, 45, was killed when her car went off the left side of the highway and struck a parked car in the median near mile marker 147, troopers said.

The parked vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the wreck, troopers said. The driver was retrieving an object that had blown out of the vehicle, they said.

Brooks’ husband, Michael Brooks, 40, was transported to Nash General Hospital and was listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

I-95 was narrowed to one lane from about 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., when a second lane opened. All lanes in both directions were reopened by 10 a.m., authorities said.
