Teen Drowns at Kerr Lake

Posted Updated

HENDERSON — A 17-year-old boy described as a good swimmer, drowned Thursday afternoon at Kerr Lake. His body was recovered about an hour after he went under at the Satterwhite Point recreation area.

Parks Superintendent Henry Boswell says Kurtis Earl Kurtis was swimming with friends in an area along the shoreline not specifically designated for swimming. The area is frequently used by swimmers, and Boswell says it is not illegal to swim there.

Witnesses say the teen began to struggle at about 3 p.m. and called out to his friends for help. They thought he was joking and did not respond.

When they realized he was serious, it was too late to help him. The friends and two off-duty Henderson police officers tried to get to the swimmer, but were unsuccessful.

Police say there is no indication of any alcohol or drug use.
