Videotapes Link Suspects to Sex Ring

Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD — Johnston County investigators have broken up what they're calling a juvenile sex ring. They've arrested two men for taking indecent liberties with children and sexual exploitation.

The two suspects, one man from Clayton and one man from Smithfield, were arrested separately. However, evidence collected in Clayton appears to link the two men together. That evidence includes videotapes of the suspects allegedly involved in a sexual encounter with a juvenile boy. Wednesday, both men are in the Johnston County jail facing some serious charges.

It was in Christopher Kirby Jones' in rural Johnston County that deputies say they found their shocking evidence, videotapes of Jones and at least one 13-year-old boy engaged in sexual acts.

Detectives say Jones and 25-year-old Melvin Carroll were running some sort of sex ring involving juveniles. Carroll was arrested in April for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl then.

"A search warrant was obtained and a search was done of the residence," says Detective Chris Strickland of the Johnston County Sheriff's Office. "Due to the evidence that was collected from this residence, Mr. Kirby Jones was arrested and charged Monday night with statutory sexual offense against a person 13, 14 or 15 years old.

Detectives aren't leaking much more information as to what happened inside the suspects' homes or what the videotapes showed, but they do say they're taking the case very seriously as there is at least one juvenile involved.

The bond for the charges the two suspects are facing adds up to a minimum $2.5 million dollars.
