— A Chatham County sheriff's deputy was killed early Wednesday in a single-vehicle wreck, authorities said.

Deputy Aaron Gabriel Whitaker, 24, of N.C. Highway 42 in Carbonton, was off-duty when he was involved in an accident in Moore County at about 2:45 a.m., authorities said.

The wreck occurred on a rural road near Carthage, and Whitaker was thrown from his vehicle after hitting a power pole, authorities said.

Whitaker had been employed with the Moore County Sheriff's Office for three years before joining the Chatham County Sheriff's Office two months ago.

When Aaron started his career in Law Enforcement he was asigned to my shift. I was his supervisor and I immediately knew that Aaron was more of a friend than an employee. I met Aaron's parents and was accepted as part of that family. We will all miss him deeply. I love you man.

Aaron: A wonderful friend and a great officer. I can tell you he will truly be missed in this community. I had him as a friend and employee and he was as good and his word. He joins my husband and several friends that had gone ahead of him in the past year. They will all be missed, But they all are in a better place and they will all be waiting for us to join them. We have to live one day at a time as if it was our last. I love you Aaron!!!!! and I pray your family and friends will find peace and understanding very soon!! May we all find strength together.

My husband and Aaron grew up and went to school together and his mother was my guidance councilor in high school. Mr. and Mrs. Whitaker raised Aaron to be a kind, respectful, down-to-earth man. He was an oustanding officer and truly a great guy. My prayers go out his family for God's peace and comfort.

My prayers go out to Mary Ruth, Russell, and Abby. Abby and I grew up together, so I had the pleasure of knowing her brother Aaron as well. I can not even express how sorry I am for what his family is going through right now. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. Aaron will truly be missed. God be with you.
