Durham Council Members Hike Their Salaries

DURHAM — City council members in Durham are writing larger paychecks for themselves.

The board approved a 37 percent salary increase when they approved the city budget Monday night. They are now some of the highest-paid council members in the state.

Durham's new city budget also includes money for hiring 13 new police officers and nine support staff.

Money was also allocated to add 18 firefighters to the department.
