Police responded to a report of a traffic accident early Monday and wound up investigating a slaying.

Officers were dispatched at 12:10 a.m. to a traffic accident with injuries in the parking lot of Chesterfield Apartments, 1808 Chapel Hill Road. When they arrived, they found a man in his 20s lying next to a vehicle, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The investigation revealed the man had been in an altercation and suffered head injuries, police said.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Durham Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 919-560-4440 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
