Great Day for a Regatta

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — With the sun shining brightly and temperatures pleasant, the second day of the 30th annual Tar Heel Regatta is under way at Lake Wheeler Park.

The American Power Boat Association is staging the event, which has attracted about 80 professional drivers. The Optimist Club of Raleigh sponsors the regatta.

The boats shoot across the water at speeds of 100 mph, and men and women compete against each other on the APBA circuit.

The boats race around an oval course for 5 miles.

About 6,000 spectators are expected to make it to Lake Wheeler for the two-day event.

The racing season runs from May to October.
