Six Errors Cost Athens High First Championship Game

Posted Updated

ZEBULON — The boys 4A baseball championships are contested at Five County Stadium in Zebulon.

Athens High of Raleigh has hovered near the top of the state rankings all year long. While NW Guilford has put together a great winning streak after a mediocre start.

Game one on Saturday went to the Vikings, as Athens commits a six errors.

Athens Drive began with three runs in the second inning to take the lead, and a home run in the forth moved the Jags to a 4-1 lead.

However, six errors and wild pitches allow the Viking to move ahead 6-4 after the third inning.

The game ended with NW Guilford winning 11-7 over Athens.

"The bottom line is that Northwest hits better and plays a lot better defense," Athens' coach John Thomas said. "We made six errors, and it's hard to win when you make six errors."
