Wilson Co. Teacher's Assistant Charged with Sex Offenses

Posted Updated

WILSON — A Wilson County teacher's assistant is out of the classroom and behind bars, charged with multiple sexual offenses. He was arrested early Thursday afternoon.

Beddingfield High School teacher's assistant Wayne Woodard faces four counts of second degree sex offense. Woodard, 35, was arrested and locked up in the Wilson County jail under a $100,000 bond.

Students who know Woodard are surprised to hear of the serious charges.

Beddingfield's principal and county administrators say they have not been able to talk with deputies yet, so they declined to discuss the arrest. They were not able to confirm or deny if the charges involve Beddingfield students.

Students who know Woodard say they are surprised at the charges.

"He seemed quiet," said student Shequita Williams. "He'd go around the school, he'd speak to students, and that was it. That's all I remember... I wouldn't think that he would be charged with anything like this."

"He's not the type of guy that would go around looking at girls or something like that," said student Timothy Bastien. "He was just a calm, sweet, kind of a fun guy."

School is out for the summer, but news of Woodard's arrest traveled quickly to students.
