Fire destroyed an abandoned apartment complex off of N.C. Highway 210 in Spring Lake early Friday.

A nearby vacant house also sustained about $30,000 worth of damaged in the blaze, which started around 11:30 p.m. Thursday night. Several mobile homes had power line damage, and the families were displaced for the night.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames away from a nearby church. Firefighters from Harnett and Moore counties and other Cumberland County departments were called in to help.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the fire but said the area has been a popular one for transients.

Fire officials said the owner had planned to demolish the building to put in new apartments.
