FORT BRAGG, N.C. — The XVIII Airborne Corps Headquarters will deploy in October to oversee day-to-day operations in Iraq, officials said Monday.

The XVIII Airborne Corps will replace the III Corps from Fort Hood, Texas, as the Multi-National Corps – Iraq headquarters, officials said. The deployment of the corps headquarters and some of its components is part of a scheduled rotation of forces to support military operations in Iraq, officials said.

The 82nd Airborne Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, will deploy to Iraq in June, and the 2nd Combat Team, which deployed in January, will have its tour of duty extended until January, officials said. the 2nd Combat Team had been scheduled to return to Fort Bragg in September.

“We acknowledge the hardships and sacrifice of our soldiers and their families and are aggressively pursuing means to lessen their strain, especially for those serving extended tours of duty,” Col. Billy J. Buckner, spokesman for the XVIII Airborne Corps, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, about 270 Marines and sailors returned to Camp Lejeune Monday after spending the last seven months in Iraq.
