FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — A Fuquay-Varina woman has been charged in connection with the death of her boyfriend early Sunday morning.

Harnett County deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a residence at 122 H. H. McKoy Lane about 3:30 a.m., where they found the body of  Billy Ray Williams. Williams was apparently killed by a gunshot wound, investigators said

Investigators later arrested Mary Delois McKoy, 55, who lived at the house where Williams was found. McKoy was charged with first-degree murder and felony possession of a firearm in connection with Williams' death.

Deputies said Williams and McKoy were in a romantic relationship. The motive for the shooting has not yet been discovered, investigators said.

"As far as I could tell, they was good friends," said Maurice Arnold, who said he has known McKoy his entire life. "He used to come cut her grass, whatever that she needs done. But you never know what goes on behind closed doors."

Neighbors also said McKoy was sick and Williams would often care for her.

Williams was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill to determine the exact cause of death, investigators said.

McKoy was being held at the Harnett County Detention Center Sunday evening without bond on the murder charge and a $100,000 bond on the firearm possession charge.  She is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

“She was a good lady,” Arnold said. “She didn't appear to be that way, but things happen in life. I still can't believe it."
