SMITHFIELD — Members of an eastern Johnston County church will assess the damage this morning following a late-night fire.
An electrical fire was spotted about 9:30 Sunday night at the Stancil's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Firefighters say the fire began in a cross hanging outside the church.
They were able to put out the flames quickly, while members of the church watched and prayed that their church would not burn down.
Most of the damage is from the smoke and water. No word on when it will re-open.
