— A man crushed last week by equipment at a gravel pit has died of his injuries, authorities said.

Michael Wayne Pegram, 24, of Fayetteville, was operating a backhoe at C.J. Pegram Sand and Gravel Co. last Wednesday when it slid down an embankment and flipped over him, authorities said.

Pegram was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in critical condition and died Sunday from his injuries, authorities said.

Authorities haven't determined what caused the accident.

I am sorry for your loss. I work with heavy equipment everyday, make sure you keep yourself restrainend in the veheicle at all cost. The machine feels secure but you can't always expect to stay in the cage when you aren't tied down. Hopefully any heavy equip op will start wearing his or her belt.

I noticed his last name is the first name of the business, so it might be a family business - a family that certainly never counted on this. Prayers going out to his loved ones. God bless. Rev. RB

As a safety professional I know it is required that the operators wear the seatbelt in all heavy equipment for this very reason. This is a very sad story that very possibly been prevented.
