FAYETTEVILLE — Cumberland County commissioners have passed a plan to take $9 million away from the county-owned hospital.

If the plan is approved by Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, the payments over three years will be used to keep county property taxes low.

Hospital officials say they will have to tighten their belts, but the loss should not translate into rate increases for patients or layoffs for staff.

In the long run, officials say the hospital's credit rating could be effected. Cape Fear Valley Medical Center had a $20 million profit last year.
