The district court recently ruled that universities could no longer provide scholarships based on race. Now the UNC system is taking a closer look at its race-based policies and programs. That has some students concerned about the future of minorities on campus.
It was standing room only at NC State, as students voiced their displeasure with the university's review of minority programs. Programs like the Dean's Minority Scholarship, which has helped many African-Americans pay for school. Receipient Monique Judkins says that the policies are positive for the university.
All public universities in North Carolina have a scholarship program to attract minorities and create a diverse population on their campuses. But, that could soon change.
Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Thomas Stafford says many of those programs will be modified so that they will not be based only on race.
Also under review are several African-American organizations on campus. Many students don't want the changes. They hope by voicing their concerns, they can make a difference.
The students and supporters of the minority programs say that since the conditions that lead to affirmative action still exist, then there is still a need for the program.
