3 Die in Lumberton Canal

e-mail print friendly

A roadside canal is the site of another deadly accident in North Carolina. This one claimed three lives.

Two women and a 3-year-old girl drowned Tuesday, inside a car that flipped over into the rain-swollen canal.

The victims were 39-year-old Maria Torres, 28-year-old Claudia Corona, and her 3-year-old daughter Vanessa -- all from Lumberton.

At least 30 people have drowned in similar accidents in North Carolina since 1980.

The state Department of Transportation is considering placing warning signs near roadside canals that are deep enough to submerge a car.
