Hope Mills, N.C. — What was once a popular summer attraction in Cumberland County is a weed-choked eyesore, and it has been that way for years.
But not for much longer.
Work began this week on a $10 million project to restore Hope Mills Lake, which dried up after its dam washed away Memorial Day weekend four years ago.
Heavy rains breached the 82-year-old earthen dam, crumbling nearby Lakeview Road and turning the lake into a stump-studded mudflat.
Construction on a new spillway and dam is set to begin in April. The lake is expected to be ready for swimmers by July 4, 2008.
