Students from Davis Drive Elementary were at the public library in Apex Saturday teaching folks how to surf the net by providing mini-introductory sessions.
The Internet can be used as a really good resource to help find things they need for school or to dig more deeply into a subject that has caught their interest.
The Davis Drive Elementary students are part of the SWAT team, an acronym that stands for Students Working to Advance Technology. They teach other kids, teachers and adults about the Internet.
Teacher Lucy Miller said she thought bringing the children -- and their web skills -- into the community would encourage learning.
"Just recently," she said, "we had an adult who had never used the Internet gain assistance from one of my swat team students -- who feel very comfortable sharing their knowledge with adults."
When they're in school, SWAT team members use their techno-skills to help fellow students with searches and word processing. No need to sell the benefits of the Internet to this group.
Lauren Avery said the web has come to her assistance. "I once had to do an animal report and found the Internet easier to use than books. It was easier to understand than a book was."
The students also broadcast morning weather information from the Internet at their school.
