Military Investigators Search for Cause of Training Fatality

Posted Updated

FORT BRAGG — Military investigators are trying to figure out what caused a fatal training accident Wednesday night at Fort Bragg. The accident was connected with Operation Purple Dragon, one of the largest joint exercises in Fort Bragg history. A similar jump was held last year. The soldier died Wednesday night when the parachute he was using malfunctioned. He was with the 82nd Airborne Division. Wednesday's drop involved 3,000 paratroopers along with 1,400 soldiers and Marines.

This was the tenth fatal jumping accident on post since 1994. Military officials say safety is always their main concern, and rigorous training is in place to prevent even more accidents.
