The Durant Road landfill is taking three times the volume it used to, before other landfills closed.

The Durant Road Landfill is now the only landfill in operation in Wake County. It's a modern, efficient operation, that's taking in a mountain of trash, but not everyone is pleased with it.

Landfill Contractor Beth Hess says the increase in volume has been amazing.

The shutdown of Raleigh's landfill and the Feltonsville facility in southern Wake County has meant more than triple the amount of trash and trucks at Durant. Lynda Fuller of Wake County Solid Waste Management says they are trying to be good neighbors.

The county says despite the big increase in volume, operators of the Durant facilityaretrying to be good neighbors, but after the first three weeks of operation, those who live near the new landfill. Neighbors admit they knew the landfill was there when they moved in, but say they didn't count on all the increased traffic coming later. Resident Nancy English says traffic is just too heavy.

There is relief in sight for the neighbors and the county, at least until a new landfill opens in 2003.
