Neighbors Line Up To Fight Landfill Plan

Posted Updated

SHOTWELL — Concerns about home values, traffic, and pollution are some of the arguments against a proposed landfill in our area.

The site, off of Smithfield Road, is 1,000 feet north of the Wake-Johnston County line.

Neighbors of a 67-acre site in the Shotwell community of far eastern Wake County have a big beef with the owner's plans for it. Opponent George Kahdy says that petitions are circulating.

The proposal for this land is to turn it into what is called an inert debris landfill, commonly called a "stump dump." It would contain various kinds of brush, as well as construction debris, like brick, wood, and other uncontaminated kinds of soil.

The landfill would be similar to one located in northern Wake County. The two sides in this battle squared off in front of county planners.

David Shearon, the attorney for Frank Lovick, the landowner, says that among other things, the landfill won't generate the traffic that other uses of the land could.

Nearby homeowners, like Steve Hansen, have a problem with the kind of traffic that the proposed landfill would generate.

Planners gave the proposal the thumbs-up. But, county commissioners must still approve the landfill idea.

County commissioners will vote on the landfill early next month. On that same day, they will hear a proposal for another one in the Holly Springs area.
