e-mail print friendly

Funeral services will be held Tuesday for James E. Legates, 75. Legates was dean of the N.C. State University School of Agriculture from 1971 to 1985.

Legates died Friday while working on his LeLait Dairy Farm in southern Granville County.

Legates was praised by former university colleagues for strengthening the School of Agriculture while he was dean. Prior to assuming the school's leadership, Legates conducted research into animal genetics.

The Delaware native joined the NCSU faculty in 1949 as a professor.

Legates was active in the United Methodist Church and held many positions within the church.

Funeral services will be held at Banks United Methodist Church in Oxford, with his son, Rev. Bruce E. Legates assisting. Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford is handling arrangements. Visitation will be at the church after the service.

Legates is survived by his widow Betty, four children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
