Voluntary Water Restrictions Back In Durham

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — There is good news about the water situation in Durham. The city is no longer under mandatory water restrictions.

As a result of the rainfall over the past few weeks, Lake Michie has risen 11.36 feet and the Little River Reservoir has risen 9.15 feet.

"I am pleased to report that with the rise in water elevations at our two water supply lakes, we no longer feel that it is necessary to impose water restrictions on our customers. We have lifted the restrictions in Stage III and will return to Stage II," said Baker. "We would like to thank our residents for their compliance with the restrictions and encourage them to continue to use our water wisely."

Stage II water restrictions entails the following:

  • Reduce toilet flushing to the minimum, whenever practical.
  • Water the lawn only when grass shows signs of withering; water late in day after 6 p.m. if possible.
  • Limit watering of shrubs to a minimum and reuse household water when possible.
  • Limit car washing at home.
  • Limit washing down sidewalks, driveways, patios, and other hard surfaces.
  • Use biodegradable, disposable dishes and utensils (residential and commercial) where feasible.
  • The city had been under mandatory restrictions since Nov. 7.
