RALEIGH, N.C. — Traffic was backed up along the Interstate 440 Beltline for more than a mile Wednesday night after an accident shut down two lanes.
Authorities say George Payne, 57, of Nashville, Tenn., was driving an 18-wheeler when he lost control, hit a guardrail and ran off the roadway near the Yonkers Road exit.
Payne was transported to WakeMed, where he was declared death. Police said Payne's death may have been the result of a heart attack rather than injuries related to the accident.
