RALEIGH, N.C. — A local state trooper was arrested Friday night on drunken driving charges.

According to state Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Everett Clendenin, Trooper S.M. Mangum was charged with DWI on N.C. Highway 49 in Person County about 7:30 p.m.

Mangum, who patrols Caswell County, was administered a blood test, Clendenin said. Authorities are now awaiting the results.

Mangum was admitted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill after his arrest, but Clendenin would not elaborate on what prompted his hospitalization or on his current condition.

The Highway Patrol is taking internal actions in response to Mangum’s arrest, Clendenin said. There was no word on if the trooper has been suspended.
