A local state trooper was arrested Friday night on drunken driving charges.

According to state Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Everett Clendenin, Trooper S.M. Mangum was charged with DWI on N.C. Highway 49 in Person County about 7:30 p.m.

Mangum, who patrols Caswell County, was administered a blood test, Clendenin said. Authorities are now awaiting the results.

Mangum was admitted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill after his arrest, but Clendenin would not elaborate on what prompted his hospitalization or on his current condition.

The Highway Patrol is taking internal actions in response to Mangum’s arrest, Clendenin said. There was no word on if the trooper has been suspended.

I personally know this Trooper from when I lived in Caswell County. My husband was with EMS up there and worked with him often. He is a good, kind, generous man..not one of your 'gung-ho' officers. I don't know what happened or why he was drinking and driving, and him being a good person doesn't negate the fact that it's against the law period. I just hope he gets the help he needs. Good luck Trooper Mangum.

ALL TROOPERS ARE HUMAN THEY HAVE PROBLEMS JUST LIKE THE REST OF US. THEY SHOULD NOT BE JUDGED WITH OUT KNOWING THE HOLE STORE.I KNOW THIS TROOPER IN QUESTION HE IS A GREAT GUY WHO IS HAVING A FEW PROBLEMS THAT HE DOESN'T DESERVE.

But for the Grace of God it could have been any of us !

Troopers and firemen are the ones that have to attend every accident and take a good look at what happened. The rest of the population can look the other way, or see the ambulance drive off. It has got to be difficult to return to normalcy after taking care of an accident. I cannot say anything detrimental about this trooper, except, hope all goes well for him.

Yes, some of them think they are above the law themselves, but I would not have their job, dealing with people not at their happiest moments...so, warts and all, I still want to see them out there when I am on the road, preferably before they see me : )

It doesn't surprise me that he thought he could drive after "a few" drinks, if that is what happened...that is what every drunk driver thinks. One is too many; appoint a designated driver, please. Just look at how many items are listed with this one about accidents due to drunk drivers...Save a North Carolinian, don't drink and drive.
