FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — State health officials are confirming North Carolina's first case of rabies of the year in an opossum.

The animal was found near Fort Bragg.

Despite popular belief, rabies in opossums is rare.

The state's public health veterinarian says this was the first case he's seen in more than 50 years.
