Standoff Ends Peacefully In Raleigh

Authorities said they received a call at about 2 a.m. about a suspicious person driving erratically in a parking lot near the

Milner Inn

just inside the Interstate 440 loop.

Police surrounded a pickup truck, driven by Malcolm Bryant Huffman Jr. 41. Police said Huffman did not initially cooperate with them, but after three hours, surrendered peacefully. He was was arrested and charged with going armed to the terror of the public.

The warrant charging Huffman said he had armed himself "with a black automatic style pistol (pellet gun) and terrified others by going about on a public highway ... walking around with the gun pointed at his chin and chest attempting to make Raleigh police shoot him."

Police did not say why Huffman was in his truck, but said he was involved in a standoff with officers nearly a year ago

at the same location

. That time, he barricaded inside a Corvette, authorities said.

Guests at the Milner Inn were told to stay on the floor until the situation was resolved. A nearby strip club was also evacuated.

Huffman was also charged with the violation of a valid protection order, which was not related to Wednesday morning's standoff on Capital Boulevard.
