Police found Nakeidra Gunn and her daughter, Tayanna Cofield, dead inside a bedroom at a first-floor apartment on Glasson Street Sunday afternoon.
Authorities said a concerned relative had called the police department earlier in the day and asked them to check on Gunn and her two children because they had not been heard from since Friday.
A 2-year-old boy found sleeping in the apartment was unharmed, Durham police said.
Investigators said there were no obvious signs of trauma or foul play and that the deaths did not appear to be suspicious. Preliminary autopsy results revealed no signs of foul play; further test results will be available in several weeks, police said.
Neighbors said Monday that they thought they had heard the 2-year-old crying Saturday night.
"Everybody just said they heard the baby crying all night long," said neighbor Shareka Johnson. "And that morning, when we got up, my son heard a baby crying, and I thought it was the girl's baby who stayed upstairs. But she said it was not her baby, so, it had to be the baby downstairs."
