RALEIGH, N.C. — A 19-year-old was charged with death by motor vehicle in a wreck that killed a man and injured his wife Friday afternoon.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said that a sport utility vehicle traveling north on Barefoot Road was struck by a car going east on Wagstaff Road just after 4 p.m. Friday.

The SUV rolled over in the wreck and one person was ejected.

Richard Robins Garner, 65, of Fuquay-Varina, a passenger in the SUV, was killed. His wife, Margaret Garner 69, who was driving the SUV, was flown to UNC with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car was Caressa Byrd, 19, the Highway Patrol said. She was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign and was released from jail, the Highway Patrol said.

Byrd and her baby son were not hurt in the accident.
