Joseph Robert Yarborough, 23, of Fayetteville, faces one count of child abuse inflicting serious injury and two counts of misdemeanor child abuse.
Yarborough was arrested Friday after his 22-month-old son suffered a fractured leg along its mid-shaft. He is also charged with failing to provide proper food and living conditions for a second child, a 5-month-old daughter.
Yarborough's wife, Jennifer Joan Yarborough, 22, was also arrested Friday and charged with two misdemeanor counts of child abuse and neglect.
Investigators said the living conditions at the couple's home were "deplorable and not safe for the children," who are in the custody of the Cumberland County Department of Social Services and have been placed in foster care. The boy, authorities said, is now recovering from his injury.
The couple is scheduled to appear in court again Dec. 7.
