Police Looking For Pair Who Took $8,000 From 80-Year-Old Woman

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Chapel Hill police are searching for two women who persuaded an 80-year-old woman to give them $8,000.

Police said the incident happened like this:

On Wednesday, two women approached a Chapel Hill woman in a store at University Mall. The two women asked the elderly woman to accompany them to their vehicle, where they urged her to write a check for $8,000. They drove her to the SunTrust Bank at the mall.

One woman accompanied the victim into the bank, where she presented the check to the teller. The teller gave the woman $4,000 in cash and a $4,000 cashier's check. The women then drove the victim to the SunTrust Bank at University Square on West Franklin Street. The same woman accompanied the woman into that bank, where they cashed the cashier's check.

The victim gave the women the $8,000 cash.

The two women then drove the victim back to University Mall, where they left her.

One woman is a black female with an average build. She is believed to be 30 to 40 years of age.

The woman who entered the bank is a black female, 50 to 55 years old. She has a large build, light brown hair, and a light complexion. She was wearing a purple turtleneck sweater, dark pants and glasses.

If anyone has any information about this robbery or can identify the woman in the photograph, call either the Chapel Hill Police Department at 968-2760 or Crimestoppers at 942-7515. Calls to Crimestoppers are confidential and anonymous, and the caller may be eligible for a cash reward up to $1,200 for information that leads to an arrest.
