DURHAM, N.C. — Authorities say a sport utility vehicle crashed into the side of a house in Durham.

The accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. when a northbound Jeep Cherokee, driven by 51-year-old Michael Lamont Vanderveer, ran off the road and struck a utility pole. The vehicle then ran into the corner of a house

2400 block of Fayetteville Street

.

According to investigators, Vanderveer died in the accident. Investigators are trying to determine if a medical problem may have caused Vanderveer to lose control of his vehicle.

Arthur Barnes and his wife, who live in the house, did not have any serious injuries.

"I didn't hear any skid marks. All I heard was a big bang and the next thing I know is everything from my front wall comes running over me," he said.

Barnes said it is the third time a car has run into his home.

The accident knocked power out to residents in that area. Duke Power crews say power should be restored by 5 p.m. Wednesday.
