Garner police have charged a driver for his role in an accident that caused traffic problems for the morning commute.

The accident occurred early Friday morning near the intersection of

Mechanical Boulevard and Highway 70

.

According to police, a 2004 Nissan Altima driven by 25-year-old Joshua Hillin was heading westbound on Highway 70 when it hit the utility pole. The crash caused the traffic lights to fall, prompting police to close the intersection.

Investigators later found Hillin at the Days Inn on South Wilmington Street. He was transported to WakeMed with minor injuries before being taken to the Wake County Jail.

Hillin has been charged with one count of felony hit and run and one count of driving while impaired. Damage to the traffic lights were valued at approximately $4,000.

The traffic lights were repaired around 10:30 a.m. after Progress Energy officials are installed a new utility pole.
