Second Body In Minivan Is Missing Kinston Woman's Granddaughter

On Monday, crews recovered the 1998 Dodge Caravan of Gail Haddock-Dail from the river in Craven County. Haddock-Dail and 15-year-old Heather Roberts were traveling to Roanoke, Va., on Dec. 6, 2004, to see family.

Authorities said that in the early-morning hours of Dec. 7, Haddock-Dail's estranged husband, Glenn Dail, received a frantic phone call from his wife, who told him they were in water and needed help.

Investigators said Tuesday that Haddock-Dail's body was the first set of human remains found in the minivan. Investigators would not say how the two died or how they ended up in the river.

WRAL, however, has learned of a construction detour that could help explain what may have happened.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation confirmed that during the time that Haddock-Dail and Roberts disappeared, that a detour on N.C. Highway 55 in Craven County forced drivers to turn onto Turkey Creek Road, then on Whetherington Farm Road to get back to Highway 55.

That area is near where divers discovered the minivan Sunday while searching for a missing fisherman. Craven County District Attorney David McFadyen would not comment on the detour.

WRAL tried to contact Glenn Dail on Wednesday, but was unable to reach him. His attorney said neither he nor Dail had any comment on the latest developments in the case.

In a statement released through their attorney, Haddock-Dail's and Roberts' family said, "The discovery of our loved ones has been both devastating and relieving. The family does not wish to make any further statement at this time."

Investigators plan to hold a news conference Thursday, when they are expected to release more details into the investigation.
