People from around the world have given more than $15 million to theHurricane Floyd Disaster Relief Fund. Checks have been sent from as far away as Japan and Australia, and donations have ranged from $900,000 to 25 cents.
Many donations come with words of support.
"Dear Sir or Madam," one letter reads. "Our 5th grade class has been collecting pennies since Hurricane Floyd hit North Carolina. We collected $50.50."
"May you know that we're thinking of you and praying for you and a quick recovery," says another.
At its peak, the fund received as much as 6,000 pieces of mail in one day. Now, the daily average is between 200 and 400. But one day last week, only three donations arrived.
"Some people do tend to forget," says relief fund organizer Julie Snyder. But the residents rebuilding after Floyd will never forget. And neither will those devoted to helping their neighbors recover.
