RALEIGH, N.C. — Progress Energy is going digital.

Crews installed their first digital meter at a home in Raleigh Tuesday.

Digital meters will allow meter readers to collect info with a radio receiver instead of walking house-to-house to read the dials, which means employees will be able to check 10,000 meters daily as opposed to 400.

Progress Energy plans to install 1.2 million residential meters in the Carolinas.
