Man Dies, Presumably While Trying To Help Beltline Accident Victims

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Wilson man is dead after investigators said he probably tried to help victims of an early-Saturday morning accident along Interstate 440.

Canoeists found the body of Todd Fletcher, 26, on the eastern bank of Crabtree Creek Sunday afternoon directly under Interstate 440 where it crosses Glenwood Avenue and Six Forks Road.

Police said they believe Fletcher stopped to help the victims of an earlier accident and that he apparently climbed over a concrete guard wall, not realizing the bridges between the Outer and Inner Beltlines were separated by open space.

Investigators said a 911 emergency center received a call from Fletcher's cellular phone at 2:41 a.m. Saturday, presumably to report the Outer Loop wreck, but that his voice never came on the line. The cell phone was discovered near his body.

There were no known witnesses to Fletcher's fall.

A call from another individual reporting the wreck was received at 2:43 a.m.
