— A Cumberland County couple charged with child abuse because their 1- and 2-year-old children were found alone turned themselves in to authorities Wednesday but said they thought a babysitter was with the toddlers.

James and Marcia Hunt were charged with misdemeanor child abuse. Police said a family friend found the 1- and 2-year-old children Sunday night inside their Spring Lake mobile home.

“They were not left alone. A babysitter was there when we left. We went to Wal-Mart to get hamburger meat. When we came back, they were gone," James Hunt said.

The children were unharmed, and Department of Social Services workers took them to their grandmother's home.

The Hunts were released on an unsecured bond.

did not know what to do so they just ran.I know alot about
the babys.they are in the care of there grandma and aunt. I
know that they will not hurt them because they dont wont a
thing in the whole world to happen to them.I hope alot of people should be happy know that the babys are safe. and yes they do drugs but that should not be cared by no one but them.because it is their body and that is how they wont to live their lives.

A coworker and myself were talking about the same thing Stephaniedawn. What age should a child be able to stay at home? But besides that. Those two babies were not near old enough and lets hope that Child Protective Services has enough common sense not to give them kids back for a long time. Rehab and parenting classes for at least a year.

50 # pack of burger might take two people to carry it! The odd thing is, they went to Wal-Mart on Sunday, when were they planning on coming back home? They turned themselves in on Wed. Yet where did they think the kids were if they came home later Sun. nite; or were they too stoned to even realize the kids weren't there or did they just not care. BS to a babysitter!!

I think that since they have been caught, hellosunshine should go and tell authorities what she knows. Maybe it will help keep those poor children away from bad parents. Its a shame that people cant just love their children enough to think of them instead of theirselves....how sad....God Bless those children.

YOU CAN LOOK AT THESE PEOPLE AND TELL THEY ARE CRACK HEADS... IF YOUR CHILD ISNT THERE WHEN YOU GET BACK... THAT SHOULD THROW UP A RED FLAG !!!! CALL THE POLICE... FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND IT WAS A LONG TIME BEFORE THEY EVEN REPORTED THEIR CHILDREN WERE MISING... BUT THE SAD THING IS .... SOCIAL SERVICES WILL LET THOSE POOR BABIES BACK WITH THE PARENTS AND WHEN THEY DIE ITS A BIG SHOCK TO THEM...

i put my 4 year old in head start in 2004. i attended a meeting that a "social worker" from Rockingham Co. was holding about the programs head start offered. Parents started asking questions etc. this one parent asked at what age is it ok to leave your child alone at home? To my surprise she stated there was no NC law that said the child has to be a certain age, BUT if you leave that 10 year old at home and something happens then you are responsible for it. She said the only law is the fire law" the child must be 10 years of age. she stated there are parent that trust there 9 year old before they would trust there 16 year old. it kinda shocked me abit. I have a 11 year old boy, 2 girls ages 10 and 6, my boy hates to ride and shop and has often asked to stay home and play his games but, its scary to me
