One Dead After Shooting At Garner Hotel

GARNER, N.C. — A Garner hotel was the scene of a shooting and stabbing Saturday night that left one man dead and another injured, according to authorities.

Investigators said three men had entered the room where the suspect, Willie Hayes, 31, of Garner, and his wife, Samantha, 37, also of Garner, were living and that a fight then broke out.

Police said Willie Hayes shot one of the men, Gary Jones, 24, of Wallace, N.C., and allegedly stabbed Greg Pickett, 29, of Kenansville.

When police arrived, Jones was dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the back, according to a statement released by the police department Sunday night. Pickett sustained non-life threatening injuries and was later arrested for possession of cocaine.

Samantha Hayes was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The third man, Kevin Pickett, 22, of Wallace, was also arrested and charged with felony possession of cocaine.

Police are still investigating and have not said what may have happened to lead to a fight.

Willie Hayes is currently in jail facing one count of first-degree murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He is currently being held in the Wake County Jail without bond.
