A convenience store clerk in Wilson called police on Sept. 23 after a man showed a police badge and never paid $25 for several gallons of gasoline.
The clerk said the man had first tried to pay for the gas with a credit card, but the card was denied.
An investigation by the Wilson Police Department led to 19-year-old Matthew Williams, who has been charged with two counts of obtaining property by false pretense and two counts of impersonating a police officer.
At the time of the arrest, Williams had a Greenville Police Department badge with him, though police have determined that Williams has no affiliation with any law enforcement agency.
Investigators also said that Williams had told a rental company that he worked for the state in an undercover capacity. Because he presented himself as a law enforcement officer, police said, Williams was provided with an apartment without making the required deposit.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine if Williams presented himself as an officer in other incidents.
