The Durham County Board of Elections confirmed that Vincent Brown withdrew his name from the mayor's race shortly before 1 p.m Thursday.
"I have made mistakes in my life -- and I am sorry for those mistakes and have learned mightily from them," Brown said in a written statement released Thursday afternoon.
On Wednesday, WRAL reported that Brown was one of six candidates running for public office in Durham that court records showed had a criminal past.
When WRAL's news staff went to Brown's office for comment Wednesday, one of his office workers told them they were trespassing and should leave.
Even though Brown's name will appear on the ballot for the primary election, the Board of Elections said any votes for Brown would not be counted.
Brown's name cannot be taken off, the board said, because ballots have already been printed.
