RALEIGH, N.C. — Local authorities have arrested a suspect that led Raleigh and Garner police on a high-speed chase near downtown Raleigh late Tuesday evening.

Jim Sughrue, a spokesman for the Raleigh Police Department, said the chase started in Garner, and stemmed from a drug-related investigation.

It ended in Raleigh on South Saunders Street near Interstate 440 when a Garner police officer struck the suspect's vehicle. The suspect, Elim Gomez, 42, then jumped from his car while it was moving and ran off.

Initial reports indicate that the chase reached speeds of more than 100 mph.

Gomez was charged with three counts of cocaine trafficking charges. Additional traffic charges are expected to follow. He is currently in the Wake County Jail.
