100-Year-Old Katrina Evacuee In Wake Forest Passes Away

Posted Updated

WAKE FOREST, N.C. — A 100-year-old woman from Louisiana who came to the Triangle after Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf Coast has died.

Shirley Jeff evacuated New Orleans and headed to Cleveland, Miss., before Katrina hit.

About 20 of her family members, also from New Orleans, arrived in Wake Forest after the storm to stay with relative Charlain Taylor.

A WRAL viewer then donated frequent flyers to reunite Jeff with her family in Wake Forest.

Family members said Jeff never adjusted and just stopped eating.

They said they hope to bury her at a family cemetery in Louisiana.
