CLINTON, N.C. — Authorities in Sampson County have charged a driver in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred Sunday night.
Thomas Lee Robinson, 33, of Clinton, is charged with hit-and-run and involuntary manslaughter.
Investigators say Robinson was driving his truck along Highway 701 at about 11 p.m. Sunday when he knocked Jeremiah Hemmingway, 56, of Clinton, off his bicycle and dragged him under the vehicle for about a half-mile.
Robinson told the North Carolina Highway Patrol that he thought he hit a deer, but after looking at the truck, troopers filed charges.
Robinson, who made his first appearance in court Tuesday, is currently in the Sampson County Jail under a $15,000 secured bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for next month.
