ERWIN, N.C. — Five men charged with murder in a deadly car accident in Harnett County last year will stand trial in Lee County.
On Aug. 20, 2004, the group of men, according to police, tried to rob the First Federal Savings Bank in Erwin, then sped off, leading officers on a high-speed chase that reached speeds estimated near 100 mph. The group, prosecutors said, then crashed into another car and killed Wanda Knox and her 17-year-old daughter, Shannon Knox.
The judge in the case moved the trial's location because the crash site is across the street from the Harnett County court building.
If convicted, each suspect -- Roame Jackson, John Kelly, Gregory King, Jodie Steele and Stephen Swinton -- faces life in prison without parole.
