Local Furniture-Store Owner Arrested For Failing To Deliver Goods

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — The owner of a furniture store in Raleigh has been arrested and charged with five counts of obtaining property by false pretense and two charges for writing bad checks, Raleigh police said.

Police said several customers complained that they had paid the Mattress and Furniture Liquidation Center, which was owned by Gardell Elvis Minix, for merchandise that was never delivered.

Police said the consumer complaints were initially filed with the N.C. Attorney General's Office, which then referred the complaints to the Raleigh Police Department.

"It has gone beyond a consumer matter, obviously, and has entered the realm of criminal," Raleigh Police Department spokesman Jim Sughrue said.

Minix is being held in the Wake County Jail.

Police said most disputes between businesses and consumers do not rise to the level of a criminal complaint.
