RALEIGH, N.C. — A man who fell asleep under a truck and then rode underneath it for several miles died after falling from the truck onto Interstate 440 Tuesday, police said.

Police said that a family who was moving to the Triangle area spent the night at the Holiday Inn Express in Cary where they had at least two vehicles, one of which was a U-Haul truck.

Police said there were reports of a man sleeping under the U-Haul Monday night in the parking lot in the hotel.

Tuesday morning, police said, the man held on to the bottom of the truck all the way from Cary to I-440 at the South Saunders Street exit.

As the vehicle came off the ramp and was turning right, the man apparently let go and was run over by the truck, police said.

The man was identified as Curtis Louis Smaw, 20, from Cheriton, Va.

No charges will be filed, police said.
